How long does an SBA 7(a) acquisition loan take to close?
Siddwell does not publish a closing timeline, and this page will not invent one. The SBA says you apply with a lender, not with the SBA. The lender's process, the file, and the SOP on that loan number are what move a date. A usual range from a blog is not cited here.
What actually has to happen
Someone has to assemble financials, a purchase agreement or at least a price and a structure, and a sources-and-uses page. A lender has to decide the deal is in its box. If the loan is a change of ownership under the 2026 SOP, Appendix 15 is where the SBA says those rules now live, and the lender has to underwrite to it. Equity injection, a seller note, and a quality-of-earnings report can each add a loop. This site does not quote the thresholds. It does say that guessing them is how files stall.
SBA 7(a) is also not the only clock. If the acquisition might be done with a bank or with private credit, those lenders have their own committees. Running them at the same time, which is what a competitive financing is, does not make the SBA lender faster. It means you are not waiting on one committee with no alternative. The SBA's stated 7(a) maximum is $5 million. A July 2026 announcement describes a combined 7(a) and 504 structure up to $10 million in defined cases. A combined structure has two processes, not one shortcut.
What Siddwell will not promise on a clock
No average days-to-close is published, because no deal statistics are published. The first call does not start a closing calendar. An engagement, a built file, and a lender who has said yes are the sequence the site describes for a financing. Until a lender issues a commitment, there is no SBA closing date to manage. Anyone who quotes you a universal SBA acquisition timeline without showing the SOP and the lender's checklist is guessing.
What moves a date, without a number of days
A date moves when a file is complete enough for a lender to underwrite and when that lender's committee answers. Financials, a price, a structure, and a sources-and-uses page are the start. Appendix 15, for a change of ownership the 2026 notice puts under SOP 50 10 8.1, can add a loop for equity, a seller note, or diligence. This site does not quote those thresholds and does not publish an average. A second lender, in a competitive process, does not make the SBA lender faster. It means one committee is not the only clock. Until a lender issues a commitment, there is no SBA closing date to manage.
How Siddwell handles this
Siddwell is an AI-native investment bank for privately held US companies with $1M to $100M in revenue, doing sell-side M&A and capital advisory.
Siddwell will not put a number of days on an SBA close. It will run a process in which more than one lender can move, and it will send you back to the SOP and the lender for the rules that govern the file.
