Now taking new mandates

What is a search fund?

A search fund is one way to pay for entrepreneurship through acquisition. Stanford describes it as a vehicle through which investors back an entrepreneur who will find, buy, and run a private company. If you own the company, a searcher is one buyer in a larger market.

What owners should check

A searcher often has investor support and operating ambition, and often does not have a committed fund the way private equity does. The equity for the deal may still need to be drawn, and the debt still needs a lender. Ask where the equity stands, who has to approve it, and what happens if the debt comes in smaller than the model. A search fund can be a good buyer. It is not, by itself, a closed financing.

Selling only to search funds narrows the market to one style of buyer. The site's position is that search funds belong in the process with everyone else who would actually pay: strategics, family offices, independent sponsors, and private equity. Weight them if you want. Do not pretend the list of searchers is the market.

What searchers should check

If you are still looking for a company, Siddwell does not finance that search. Capital advisory starts when there is a company and a use of proceeds. If you have the company and you need the debt raised, that is acquisition financing, and SBA 7(a) is one lender path when it fits, not a promise. If you want to be called when a company is being sold, that is the network: you name the mandate, and you hear from the firm when something it represents fits.

What to ask before you treat the bid as financed

Stanford's description is the clean one: investors back an entrepreneur who will find, buy, and run a private company. It does not say the equity for your company is already wired, and it does not say an SBA lender has approved the purchase. If you own the company, ask where the equity stands, who has to approve it, and what happens if the debt comes in smaller than the model. If you are the searcher and you are still looking, Siddwell does not finance that search. If the company is chosen, the remaining work on this firm's side is a financing competition, not a loan from Siddwell. In a sale, the searcher belongs with strategics, family offices, sponsors, and private equity, not instead of them.

How Siddwell handles this

Siddwell is an AI-native investment bank for privately held US companies with $1M to $100M in revenue, doing sell-side M&A and capital advisory.

Siddwell treats a search fund as a buyer on a sale, or as a client for financing only after a company is chosen. It does not run the search, and it does not lend the purchase price.
